Research

After my first session at the New Vic I began working through some of the research points within the module handbook as I felt this would help me along on my journey.

During my initial tutorial Barbara and I had discussed the key points in the module handbook and she had gone over some things for me to think about. So after feeling quite confident after participating in my first session at the Theatre I wanted to reinforce the kind of work I would be experiencing at the New Vic with some of the key questions from the handbook to consider when thinking about a possible career, I mind-mapping all my ideas as they came to me on each question.

What type of person are you?
  • Attentive
  • Team player
  • Can be sensitive
  • Emotional
  • Likes new challenges
  • Willing to learn/get involved
  • Keen
  • Hard Working
  • Trustworthy
  • Reliable
  • Organised
  • Sociable
  • Animal Lover
  • Caring
  • Listener
  • Confident
  • Hands on/ Practical
  • Accessible
  • Motivated
These are some of the immediate things which came to mind from things I think about myself, things I have learnt through working on personal branding on the other module and things I have been told by my close friends and family.

What are my circumstances?
  • Working part time
  • Financing myself
  • MA
  • Not a great deal of recent experience in field
  • Relocated for better prospects
  • Limited contacts in field
  • Learning to drive- transport will make it easier for me to get to more wider spread areas
  • BA Hons 2:1 degree
  • Long term relationship.
A lot of the current circumstance I am under is because of choices I have made about wanting to be in a career that I fully enjoy and this MA is helping to reinforce these ideas I have about my future and make me look at things in a different light.

What do you want out of a career?
  • Happiness and Fulfilment
  • Drama and Theatre based
  • Enjoyment
  • Good relationships with employers, employees and clients
  • Steady wage, live comfortably
  • Enjoyable working atmosphere
  • Working in a sociable environment
  • Inspire people
This are just a few thought I have when I think about the kind of work I want to do, and so far I am hoping that my work experience will let me get an idea of some of these things so that in the future I will have a fuller picture in mind when it comes to picking jobs.

What are you prepared to do?
  • Try new things
  • Learn new skills
  • Put self through MA
  • Fund myself
  • Do extra courses and training if necessary
  • Unpaid work- starting at the bottom
  • Working in a job I am not happy with until I reach my potential
  • Travel
  • Relocate
Some of the steps mentioned here like relocating and embarking on the MA show that I am prepared to work hard for what I want and that I have determination that this is the right path for me.

Careers Market? How realistic are you?
  • Social Networking: Twitter, Arts Jobs, Arts Opps, lots of advertisement online
  • Networks I joined during the Creativity and Enterprise module give opportunities- ArtsAdmin, ArtsHub etc
  • LONDON-lots of projects in that area, as well as Manchester and Birmingham, How important is location?
  • Freelance- a possibility?
  • More short-term based project work that long term permanent fixtures
  • Theatres? How many do community and applied theatre work?
  • Established groups?
This module is forcing me to look more in depth at opportunities which may be available to me which is something I have not been used to do before but now I am trying to check all the sites more often, which provide jobs in the sector.
