I have been overwhelmed by how easy it has been for me to secure an placement and how lucky I have been with the people I have met along the way all of whom have been so welcoming and given me every opportunity I could want to develop.
I started this module having not been in the theatre environment for much longer than i would of liked, and feeling like I lacked crucial experience which would make me stand out from the crowd. I started in my comfort zone with similar ages groups to that of people whom I had worked with previously but then came a bigger challenge.
I was so nervous the first day I worked with the Borderlines groups, I have been used to working with 'difficult' groups before, but never with this amount of people with such diverse needs. But I have found DayTrippers to be one of the groups I have bonded with the most, they are full of vibrancy and non-judgemental love. They are a very tight nit group and are really caring of every member. Where as with the youth theatre I am ore of an observer because of the age range they are, with this group I feel fully involved.
I have enjoyed all the groups I have worked with. And David the youth theatre director is amazing, he has a lot of energy which motivates everyone, and is very skilled in what he does, and able to come up with brilliant ideas on the spot. From him I have been able to learn how to be more confident in front of a group, and to go with instincts when it comes to fears and ideas. I am very privileged with the people I have met at the New Vic as I have been able to take something from each and every one of them. I have been able to both give and receive support, and face new challenges with a fresh calmer approach. Difficult situations have arisen, but after watching how Sue and the other Borderlines practitioners deal with them, I feel more confident that I would be able to handle situations like this in the correct way.
I am continuing on with the work at the New Vic for as long as I am able to because I enjoy it so much and am getting the much needed valuable experience. It has taught me to be adaptable, to push myself, to be inclusive of everyone and to truly enjoy what you do. There are some projects with the Education department over the summer holidays which I am hoping to get involved with to keep me busy until the term time groups start up again.
